LACK OF THE “REACH BACK”
LACK OF THE “REACH BACK”
Today, I was watching THE JUMP and Kobe Bryant was a featured guest (via telephone) and he discussed his thoughts on Lebron joining the coveted LAKERS franchise.
He said a profound statement in which he spoke on how the Lakers housed plenty of hall of famers who can provide proper insight for Lebron on how to lead the Lakers to the forefront of NBA dominance once more.
That sparked an idea in me, that statement attributes to the multiple reasons why it’s hard for some people to bear the burden of the responsibility to succeed.
🗣 LAKESHOOOOOOW
Many people are first generation of whatever they are doing; college students, athletes, entrepreneurs, etc. There’s a lack of people for those who strive for greatness can reach back and gain advice/guidance from.
Wisdom from elders and those who been in your shoes is extremely advantageous. Experience of others allows a person to navigate with minimal mistakes and approach difficult situations from new perspective but with just as much as poise as their predecessors.
It’s like how T’Challa has access to all the previous Black Panthers. He don’t always go to them for every dilemma but when something exceed his scope of problem solving he can go to previous generations and can come to a swift conclusion. Whether that is to listen to them verbatim or makeshift an answer based on his solutions and theirs.
To increase success, success must increase (don’t let that go over your head). More success mean more mentors more advisors to lead the youth to more prominence in society.

IS THE GRADING SYSTEM OF LAW SCHOOL FLAWED
IS THE GRADING SYSTEM OF LAW SCHOOL FLAWED
When it comes to law school, there are mainly two things people really care about: securing a job and getting the best grades possible. Grades have always been scrutinized as a measure of intelligence but in law school there’s no time for scrutiny because grades are made a huge focal point of a law school student’s career, which brings me to the following dilemma: Is The Grading System of Law School Flawed?
One of the problems grades create in law school is some people aren’t learning to learn the material their only concern is learning to get a good grade. Sure there may be many questions about the material during a lecture but guaranteed something about the exam is always brought up. “Is this on the exam”, “how would I write this on the exam”, “how much would this be worth on the exam”, etc.
It is understandable why students place heavy emphasis on the final exam because its basically the only grade you get from the class. Frankly it may be too much at stake. Students have been conditioned and hard wired to always have a contingency plan that can make up lacking percentages if they ever needed the extra boost from their professor but with law school final exams, that contingency plan is tossed out the window.
A possible solution to this problem may be weekly assignments. Weekly assignments constantly keep students on their toes and make them visit the material routinely rather than stressed out hours and hours of studying because you don’t know exactly what to study for.
Granted their is an advantage to having one big final exam with minimal assignments in between because it allows more focus to go into your studies and not worry about some quiz or piece of homework that won’t matter much.
However if students actually grasping the practicality of the material is to become the norm instead of just learning for exam purposes then the discussion is to be had and it won’t be an easy one.

FORESEEABILITY
FORESEEABILITY
Some words that has been reoccurring in my law school career are; reasonableness and of course foreseeability. Foreseeability deals with if there was a great chance a person could see something happening before it happens. Foreseeability has now been a great assistance in my waking life. I started to think twice about outcomes and what would be the most likely scenario to occur. Looking at things from a foreseeability angle makes precautionary actions easier to take.
Foreseeability helps with whether I go to an event in a shaky environment or something simple as should I put my phone in a certain spot knowing its a chance it could be damaged or something. Foresight is a gift but it can be exercised.

RELATABILITY : THE UNDEFEATED CHARACTERISTIC
RELATABILITY : THE UNDEFEATED CHARACTERISTIC
This the meme I’m talking about, https://www.instagram.com/p/BkvNkqlnKT3/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=cyvpm1otl61e
I was looking at a meme posted on Instagram and as I was laughing it made me think of “Damn, how could people be so many states removed from each other and be able to relate to the same thing”.
And that’s when it hit me, relatability is an undefeated characteristic. Being able to relate to someone cause for deeper and often more meaningful connections.
It’s why people want certain politicians in office or why everyone use a Drake lyric as their caption , it’s because of how they can relate to everyday person.
lyrics from “Doing it Wrong” by Drake, from his sophomore LP “TAKE CARE”, https://tidal.com/album/14234315
Relatability extends further then business purposes. It is how friendships are formed, how mentors are chosen, etc. it’s a way of life.
And no matter where you go or what you choose to be, to be relatable is always a strength to have.

GOOD ART DESERVES YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT
GOOD ART DESERVES YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Drake's SCORPION available now, https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/scorpion/1405365674
Last Friday was the release of hip hop’s most anticipated release of the year, Drake’s SCORPION. When SCORPION was released to digital retailers, I immediately purchased the album (not stream it, although I saved it on streaming platforms later for extra support), the point being when I deemed Drizzy’s project worthy of purchase, I did not hesitate to financially support.
Which brings me to my point good art deserves your financial support. Art is definitely subjective and when a person discovers good art that comes with a price tag a disconnect arises. People are quick to spend money on multiple trivial things but think almost twice as much before ever spending a dollar on “art”. Music is subject to illegal downloading, Small Businesses are subject to “can I get it for free”, and visual artists are stuck with the words “this is dope”.
"Past Times" by Kerry James Marshall
If art is to continue to prosper, it will take the financial backing of the people who enjoy it on the daily basis. If we claim we like something we have to put our money where our mouth is. Much like Puff Daddy did when he purchased Kerry James Marshall painting for a whopping $21 Million, making it the highest selling piece by a living black artist.
It is time to stop withholding dollars towards the art community and start a surplus of funding because the financial backing will increase employment, decrease shenanigans, and add to the welfare of the planet by uniting people under a creative umbrella .

DIVISION: HOW PROGRESS IS KEPT FROM BEING MADE
DIVISION: HOW PROGRESS IS KEPT FROM BEING MADE
Unity is a word seldom used in today’s time and it seem like the only reference the word provide is Queen Latifah’s hit song from the 80s.
Unity today is an after thought because another word plagues our society,
That word is DIVISION.
During my visit to the civil rights museum , I seen an exhibit that explained how officers would attempt to isolate black folks and focused on individualized attacks. It is common sense that a person is put at a disadvantage when alone rather than with people.
Now after reading that, think about the seed of division that has been deeply planted into our community.
We’re divided by our clothes, the cars we drive, our employment, our education, stuff which are frivolous in the grand scheme of things.
The common goal is prosperity as a people, so how can this be achieved? Simply by coming together. That is extremely easier said than done it almost sound naive but it could be done.
Adding together the strengths of communities, subtracting the weaknesses, and multiplying the numbers of people involved in the fight for change are all factors that destroy division.
To be divided is to be separated which in reality is being held from progress.
A basketball team divided could never win a championship.
A car divided could never drive properly on the road.
And a house divided could never stand.
People come together by honing In on a common goal and knowing the role everyone plays.
Everyone isn’t a Martin Luther King and everyone can’t be Michael Jordan but everyone can have an impact.

THE JOURNEY OF A PRAYER WARRIOR W/ ANGIE
THE TEETERING LINE OF AN ARTIST’s EGO
THE TEETERING LINE OF AN ARTIST’s EGO
There’s been a thought that has been lingering on my mind lately and its the question of “how big of a role does ego play in the life of an artist”? I mentioned ego specifically because I’ve thought about the public display of artists’ work.
When an artist prepare for a showcase the artist puts their heart and soul into pieces that will be appreciated (and purchased if for sale) by those in attendance. Isn’t that a bit egotistical? Think for a second..in the simplest of terms you’re basically saying “everyone this is my art please praise to no end and give me money for coloring and making stuff..please and thanks”. However what stops showcases from being a public display of an artist’s ego is people interest in them.
People gather round to shows and museums not to fall head over heels for the artist (although some do) people attend for the experience that comes with heart. You come together and look at extensions of a person’s mind in tangible form, you enjoy food, time with family, etc. All the things that were mentioned from a negative perspective earlier can be spun to a positive point, its all about how the user look at it.
Just like there are people who couldn’t understand why four blocks of color could be considered art there are those who are able to find the deeper meaning in it and those are the ones who help art be seen as an appreciative measure rather an egomaniac begging for attention.

THE FLUIDITY OF AN ICONIC CHARACTER
THE FLUIDITY OF AN ICONIC CHARACTER
Ryu in Power Rangers?!! Who would’ve knew
Ryu as he appears in super smash bros
After watching the reveal trailer for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, I saw RYU and I was like “man my guy is in everything”.He was just revealed as a guest character in the POWER RANGERS mobile game, POWER RANGERS: LEGACY WARS. That discovery led me to think “man when you have a truly iconic character there is no limit in what you can do with them.”
Kishimoto drawing his iconic characters NARUTO and SASUKE
Many artists/creators start out with the mindset of “this is my character and here’s how this character is going to play out in this story”. What the creator don’t realize is that the character may transcend that limited script and be featured in almost everything because of how beloved the character is.
Iconic characters can end up in cross-genre movies, merchandising, and even with their own theme park (I see you Mickey).
So if there are any creators out there just hoping for their game to be played, manga to be read, or film to be seen just know if you play it right your character can transcend culture itself to become a global icon you never imagined it could be.

ALBUM CREDITS AND WHY THEY’RE IMPORTANT
ALBUM CREDITS and WHY THEY’RE IMPORTANT
new kanye west album out now , “YE”, https://tidal.com/album/89768255
Today a new Kanye album has released and it sparked something in me about album credits. Being that I heard the album during a livestream it made me wonder about who produced what, who’s featured, what are the name of these samples??!
Gone are the days of flipping through that CD book admiring the fresh photo shoot, reading the thank you note, and of course the album credits(which sometime featured lyrics).
Album credits are essential to an album because you can see everyone who contributed to the sound that are pleasing to your ears.
For example, Kanye West’s All of The Lights from his 2010 album “MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY”. It was like a thousand people on that song and without the credits it would hard to identify everyone who was apart of that song.
1. everyone’s voice wasn’t distinguishable
2. Every person behind each instrument/lyric cannot be identified.
My album. FIRST OF HIS NAME, out now , go to the music tab to listen. Also on all streaming platforms.
Album credits add to the excitement of the album. Even with my own album, if you check the iTunes info you can see the names of people I went to school with and samples I’ve used that may not be identifiable. It makes people wanna listen even more when they can identify with something so close to them like seeing they’re on name or hearing themselves.
With the digital takeover, the CD collector has been at a disadvantage with fully capturing the moment of purchasing a new album.
But thanks to Platforms like TIDAL that include the credits, users can get a sense of the old times once more.

THE NEW FLYEST GUY IN THE NBA?!
THE NEW FLYEST GUY IN THE NBA?!
When it comes to fashion of high profile basketball athletes a couple of names come to mind. Lebron, Russell, Harden, etc. but there been a new face when it comes to NBA fashion. That person is……PJ Tucker.
PJ Tucker effortlessly connects grail-level sneakers (that’s the word for exclusives for those who don’t know) with current trends that never feels like he’s over doing it.
PJ hoops in the Nike Air Yeezy 2
Even on the court, PJ Tucker has been consistent with the shoe game which makes him in the talks of the best on-the-court style in the league.
Off White c/o PJ Tucker? Ha! PJ styles in exclusive colorway of Virgil's take on the Hyperdunk.
If there is a NBA style award category for the 2018 and PJ Tucker isn’t involved then ask yourself: Is there really a NBA STYLE AWARD then?

THE BAD THING ABOUT BOOKS
The Bad Thing About Books
Classic, but often used for the fake flex on socials lol.
In an effort to become successful most people starting common denominator is to read a book on how to become successful. Reading those successful stories could be inspiring but the inspiration is where the danger lies. Another danger that comes from the book is if the book has much notoriety (i.e. 48 Laws of Power), the book is purchased just to show society that they’re in the “know”.
Books should be used to educate, entertain, inform, persuade, etc. but it shouldn’t be used as a simple image enhancer that the reader gain nothing from but likes on social media.
If people want to become truly better then the next time a book is in their possession, it must be established that this book isn’t just a photo optic, its a stack of pages that could potentially change your life.
Before I became an avid reader I too fell for the photo optics of having a book because it added to my image of intelligence. Although that is now in the past, I will use books to add to the core soul of my intelligence and not my social media, SO WILL YOU!
have you purchased my book yet? Get one for you and a friend! 👉🏾 gettothecorner.com/lifelogsvol1
P.S. a picture of a book never hurt, sharing your daily reads is highly encouraged!

A SHOW IN THE SHOW THAT'S THE WAY TO GO
A SHOW IN THE SHOW THATS THE WAY TO GO
With heavy content driven shows it can be troublesome driving all the ideas through the limited box of storytelling. I noticed when themes that are apart of the show but not necessarily central to the plot, a satirical show is created to help dive into those story points.
INSECURE
During season 2 of HBO’s INSECURE, the satirical show in the show was called “Due North”. Due North was about a love affair during slave times in which a slavemaster was in love with one of his slaves.
One of themes in the show deals with White and Black people relationship in the work space. In the show, Issa (main character) works for a white boss and Molly (Issa’s best friend) is a lawyer in a very white firm who doesn’t get the respect she deserves.
While the show is an essentially a love comedy drama it has other themes that deal with race relations and the fake show is used to dive deeper into those themes that can’t be handled by the characters due to story restrictions.
DEAR WHITE PEOPLE
Defamation, the satirical take on ABC’s Scandal
In both seasons NETFLIX’s Dear White People had two shows that dealt with satire. More specifically it deals with how Black People are perceived in the media. The first show featured a parody of Scandal, which featured an over exaggeration of the show’s popular character, Olivia Pope. Her character is used to show how interracial relationships are perceived. This is used to vicariously highlight the feelings surrounding the relationship between two characters in the show (Gabe-white male and Sam- black female).
Breakout star/writer, Lena Waithe, stars in Trap House Tricks
The other show trap house tricks, features a parody of Love & Hip Hop. Another show used to explore the exaggeration of black portrayal in mainstream media. Being that the basis of the show stems from the results of white students holding a black face party, perception of the black community is a major theme in the show and it takes different avenues of storytelling to explore all realms of a theme with such depth.
TAKEAWAY
The inside shows are a wonderful tool of storytelling and showrunners/creators should think about including them more to explore subplots/themes that central to the story but aren’t the focal point of the story.
