  With the untimely passing of Nipsey Hussle, it is natural that people would stream his music. His passing has led fans to dive deeper into his music and casual fans started to discover his discography before his debut album Victory Lap.

I thought about the magic people must experience when they hear something for the first time when I was listening to Uptown by Drake, Lil’ Wayne, & Bun B. I remember when that song and the mixtape its featured on (So Far Gone) came out in 2009. I remember clicking on the tape w/o even knowing Drake was, it was the first day it dropped and I just seen it on a blog and thought the cover was cool. 10 years later Drake re-released the mixtape for a special anniversary and it re-enter the Billboard Charts. I imagine, even as odd as this sounds, many Drake fans first time hearing So Far Gone was from the re-release. 

However that is the beauty of music and art in general. Creators shouldn’t create with the thought of “oh this bout to impact millions right now I got one”, no. Instead creators should play the long term game knowing if people missed out this time, things always come back around and the door re-open for discovery, making the creation seem like it was just made yesterday.

Villainous Extremes

It’s unfortunate when people experience unfortunate events. When one is wronged it is natural to want to correct that wrong. But what happens when the victim becomes the victimizer? How far is too far? 

innocent girl turned cold-hearted, don’t be a victim of circumstance!

Yesterday I was watching an episode of The Flash, and the young lady wanted revenge for her parents murder. Not only did she want the woman who murdered her parents ( who did so by accident, her powers sparked an explosion she couldn’t control, she had no intent to hurt anyone) but she wants everyone with powers dead. Now she lives on the extreme side of “justice” and she is becoming the very thing she hates. 

When people lean towards extremes their cause is usually destroyed because it leaves no room for redress. The person takes an all or nothing approach that only takes away all their common sense and nothing gets solved.

Its like a personal dispute in my family. One person felt like another member came and disrespected their home. The disrespect wasn’t that extreme it was someone interfering w/ domestic disputes (stay out of couple arguments unless you really have to step in to discourage violence). But the one person went to the other member house and took things a whole different level. Now he’s on a crusade to disrespect her every waking moment he get until she apologizes for her disrespect. 

His crusade is now a lost cause because the extremes he acted on. Talking it out, allowing room for redress, would’ve allowed reasonable minds to differ and discuss. Now its foolish pride and a lost cause with severed relationships that may never be mended. 

When dealing with a wrongdoing the best course of action is a sensible approach. Talking it out, getting behind the reason for the wrong doing and other reasonable things. Veering into the deep extremes will only lead to more hurt and guaranteed the person you’ll end up hurting the most . . . is yourself.

Achievers often struggle with the ideas of perfection. How often are the mistakes highlighted? Mistakes can lead to wonderful things if you can learn to see the hidden magic in them. Having the intent to execute is one of the most important factors because it can lead to unexpected positive change. Take this mistake for example.

If you care anything about your future you most likely are a person that write down your goals. One day I was writing my long term goals ( I make both long term and short term goals) and I wrote that I wanted to open an art gallery called “MARCEL” (named after my middle name). The art gallery will allow local artists to use the venue to host independent showcases, will offer art classes, and exhibit fire art that I purchased from my personal collection. 

After I write my goals I read them aloud. My handwriting was a little off so I read “open MARCEL” as “open MANUAL”. I thought to myself wow that sound kinda good, I wrote that down and didn’t do anything with it yet.

Fast forward after the collapse of 88DOPEGAME, (a company I was previously affiliated with that was a parent company for all my ideas, not anymore though lol zero Jaevonn association today) I needed a new name to run my empire under. When I revisited my goals I seen OPEN MANUAL again and that’s when I decided to use that as the new company to breathe life into and accomplish my goals.

My sloppy handwriting lead me to be able to come up with something cool because the intent was to write something good down anyway but the execution allowed me to write something better.

On one of the days we were supposed to play basketball, I planned to pump the ball up for more buoyancy and efficient play. When I got to school to pump the ball, I broke the needle on the pump (it was small and meant for a miniature ball) and all the air end up being deflated. I been looking to playing basketball that day all week!

I had to get some air back in that ball I spent a hour maneuvering a needle to get air into the ball. It was half-way filled but it wasn’t enough to play with. I went home and tried to use an air mattress pump to fill the ball back up and that failed MISERABLY. 

I was like man we really need this ball can’t take a chance of being the only ones at the gym and we have no ball. Then after some googling I learned a bike shop can pump the ball…for free! I went to the bike shop and it was like I got a new ball. 

When you’re determined to ball (literally and figuratively ) you will find a way to make that happened. It just have to be important and pertinent enough and you will think of every solution possible to make it happen. How determined are you?

Today was an evening of extreme study, which involved rigorous studying as usual. I am participating in lent this year and I was waiting for the clock to strike 12(midnight) so I can eat whatever I want ( you can eat what you gave up on Sundays) but in the mean time I kept studying. 

In my mind I rationalized that no matter how hungry I was the time I had to pass and I should keep working. That train of thought made me think about how people waste time and sit idle when the time is going to pass anyways.

More specifically, the issue of attending college comes to mind. People that I grew up often talked down on attending college and chose to “get to the money”. I never understood that I always said “4 years is going to past anyway you might as well attend college, especially if you don’t have a more solid plan anyways.” Then the time eventually pass and you realize you haven’t been putting in work, you just been waiting for the clock to strike 12. Even when situations are adverse, the grind must continue because when you’re able to finally eat it makes the meal that more satisying.

  Just recently Cardi B tied Nicki Minaj as the female rapper with the most #1’s tin Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart history (4 each). This accolade undoubtedly sparked more Cardi/Nicki comparisons and probably had people saying look at how Cardi did it in such a shorter time than Nicki. 

The thing is she’s supposed to do it quicker and that’s not a knock to Nicki, its actually a credit to her. When people pave the way it shouldn’t take the people that come after them the same amount of time it took their predecessor to accomplish the same feat. If it did then what was the point of the accomplishment anyway?

All the accomplishment show is that its possible! Once a person see that its possible that should be enough ammo to go head on into reaching that goal. This is fact in fiction and even non-fiction. Once Goku reached super saiyan it didn’t take a long time for the next saiyan to become super saiyan as well. When George Lewis Ruffin became the first black student in 1869 to earn a degree from Harvard Law School it didn’t take until 1969 for another black to earn a degree from there as well. When these impossible feats happen eventually it should become a common feat. We see black law students enter Harvard all the time, its a gazillion super saiyans, so on and so forth.

However, no matter how common the feat becomes it should still be celebrated because it took immense hard work and dedication. When a goal is reached in half the time, the predecessor shouldn’t feel a way nor should the successor feel superior. As time progress a person will always accomplished what you did in a shorter time but only because they’re supposed to and when that happens don’t be afraid to give them room to shine.

The New Why Not 2.0 sneakers are so damn good, I never been affected by a Westbrook sneaker in this way before. When it comes to Jordans that aren’t the retros, the Jumpman brand exhibits trouble creating aesthetically pleasing shoes. Outside of a few Melos and a couple of Team Jordans, Jordan is trash when it isn’t a retro.

Now when it comes to Westbrook his spark was started to me when he donned the air Jordan 28, they were a beautiful OKC colorway and somehow seem perfectly fitting for him. Accompanied with a Air Jordan XXX1 PE, Russell and sneakers seem like an uniquely perfect fitting pair. Then his first signature was released and I wasn’t a fan. The first Why Not sneakers didn’t look visually pleasing and I thought Russ would be victim to the lackluster designs of Jordans that aren’t retros.

 Today me and my brother were talking about music and he brought up to me how he’s listening to Imagine Dragons now because of the college football championship. Imagine Dragons is a band I believe wouldn’t typically be heard by my brother even though he has a wide range of music choices. Him hearing them made me think of how important proper placement is. Your music on the right platform, your clothes on the right person, just solely being in the right place can change your life in an INSTANT.

Extreme product placement is heavy throughout Grown-Ish/Black-Ish, you don’t see that many BUICK logos for nothing lol. 

 Although the placement is extremely important what’s more important is having good product to begin with. No matter how many people see the product, the positioning won’t be an advantage to you if the product isn’t good to begin with.

Many times reflecting on the past can carry negative connotations. Connotations which are rightfully deserved because dwelling too long on the past hardly results in anything good and doesn’t allow a person to grow. 

However in this case the past serves as the very beacon of inspiration I need to create. Every first of the month I look at old blog posts of the same month to find cool references or any images that may spark an idea or two. This morning I found a TON of them.

Lately I’ve been thinking about the word leverage and how it plays into our everyday dealings. First lets start with a definition for the word, Leverage.

use (something) to maximum advantage.

Often in business people are fooled by money and will think as long as a dollar is presented then nothing else mattes. How foolish of them. I first thought about HOV verse on what’s free when he said “You run a check up but they never give you leverage”. Leverage allows you to move free in business, allowing you to set your own price, and be the aggressor in deal making allowing you to hardly be at a disadvantage. Which is exactly what the powers at be don’t want you at.

I also thought about how Gary Vee was explaining why he chose K-Swiss as the brand to do his sneaker deal with rather than any other brand. The deal was one that was rooted in Leverage. If Gary could bring back K-Swiss into sneaker relevance , he would be dealt the credit of making K Swiss cool again which would give him LEVERAGE in future deals. Being known as the guy that could revive a dead brand (for lack of better words) is extremely more beneficial then being paid a million upfront but the sneaker campaign turns out unsuccessful.

Leverage is all about anti-dependancy. When in control of your own terms you don’t feel the pressure to say yes just to anything but people will be willing to work with you on everything.

 When pursuing a life of creativity its easy to slip into monotony, doing things only for money, social media approval, or feeling like you have to do it. I always thought about the Charlamagne quote , “Never become a caricature of yourself.” For those unfamiliar w/ the word caricature let’s start with a definition:

 How about an example of when people tried to make me become a caricature of myself. For those who don’t know, I’m quite the dapper young fellow. Ever since high school, I’ve always been known to “Dress Up” suits,loafers,etc. When you do something long enough people just expect that to come from you. People used the suits to try to box me in. No one could imagine me rapping because I “didn’t look like a rapper”. People was extremely shocked when I wore gym shoes. They thought literally everything I wore was POLO. It was actually kinda annoying.

 If I was to allow people to box me in , I wouldn’t allow myself to grow and I would be in a stagnate frame just being the guy who dress up and whatever was associated with dressing up. I couldn’t allow that to happen.

 It’s like when people watch a Charlamagne interview and expect him to just be rude/crude to his guests for no reason just because he’s known for being raw with his guests. If he was to allow himself to become a caricature of himself he would become a lame ass spectacle saying stuff just for reactions and views. He couldn’t let that happen.

 So just because you’ve been doing something for a while or you’re known for doing something doesn’t mean you are bound to that idea of yourself. You are allowed to change at any moment, whether people like it or not.

 Yo sometimes you gotta wait till you older. Childhoods are to be cherished for the main reason being there won’t be another one for you to have but sometimes your childhood can be a pain in the ass. For me it started with a speech impediment people constantly made fun of the way I said “chicken” and a host of other words. One time in kindergarten I tried to repeat the old Lipton Brisk Tea commercial by saying “That’s Brisk Baby” and another punk ass student said “oooo he said Bitch”. I never said that and what made it heartbreaking is the teacher believed the student I hated that teacher, the school, and the class till this day.

 But as I grew older my speech impediment went away even though people now say I talk country which I don’t . People can be so stupid sometimes.

 Also, I remember when I was younger and people would always try to act cooler than life saying anime wasn’t cool and was for lames. Back then you would keep anime stuff to yourself unless you wanted to be scolded by your peers . But as we grew older, no one started to care anymore. Even now me as a 26 year old young man in law school, still watches and discusses DBZ, NARUTO, etc like I’m still 12. It what’s I enjoy so who gives a damn what people think.

 Finally, people always used to mispronounce my name I mean they said it ATROCIOUSLY, it almost deserved a slap from me maybe even a bullet lol. However now that I’m older people surprisingly say my name right on first try they say it correctly so much it makes me think what the hell was going on while I was younger.

 So as a young buck sometimes you have to charge things to the game until you’re older. A lot of things don’t change until your age does.

 The ongoing debate about whether to attend school or not continues almost each and everyday. To plainly nip the problem in the bud, YOU DO NOT NEED SCHOOL TO SUCCEED. That is extremely  generally speaking though because the main people who stick by that rhetoric are more often than not lazy and don’t put in the necessary work to succeed.

 The main argument people use is the “Bill Gates Dropped Outta Harvard” stance. That stance is extremely flawed for several reasons. After more life experience and hearing about how Microsoft came about, it was revealed to me that Bill had access to early innovative tech before anyone, you realize that first you gotta have the ability to even get in Harvard, then you gotta spend all your time working and not having a life.

 People say they don’t need school but don’t put the hours on hours on hours on hours on hours on hours into creating, failing, failing , failing , failing, failing, failing, creating, sweating, failing, innovating, etc.

 People expect to cut corners and get it quick and never realize how they are setting themselves up to lose. People who would always be adamant about NOT going to school, I would always remind them “Aye that 4 years is going on anyway might as well put it to use.” Then people make arguments about not having debt and I always thought like why is you worried about debt and you already broke lol.

Not a training sequence but this was a kick ass fight ! 

 I even thought about how the success of fictional characters embraced the idea of working super duper hard. Like in the anime NARUTO, the two strongest characters NARUTO and SASUKE trained the hardest out of everyone, nonstop and reaped the benefits. However on paper they’re rank as ninjas is still the lowest because they never passed the exam required to move up in ninja ranking. The feat of being the strongest is even more amazing for Naruto because is also the leader of his village. The leader of the village often attains the highest ninja rank before becoming the nation’s chosen leader.

 Even though they are anime characters they are prime examples of people who didn’t take a traditional route and still succeeded. But like I vocalized throughout this article don’t shun school or any form of education unless you’re going to outwork everyone that’s enrolled in school by at least a 100 times!

Yesterday I was listening to The Joe Budden Podcast w/ special Guest PUSHA T. Push has been in an on going feud with Drake for most of 2018 and while it cooled down it was rehashed due to Drake’s appearance on Lebron’s no holds barred talk show, THE SHOP.

On THE SHOP, Drake explained how he felt it was an odd coincidence that he confided in hip hop megastar Kanye West about his secret child, release dates, etc. only to be dissed by Push on a Ye beat followed by a horde of things Drake didn’t approve of .

As the conversation continued on Joe’s podcast I thought damn “Should We Even Have Heroes”? PUSHA T is someone Drizzy looked up to, even buying a supposedly used microphone of his and now he has to go to war with him. Kanye is also a blatant influence on Drake yet he has to publicly destroy Kanye because he felt slighted by Mr. West’s actions as of late.

  It must be a hard thing to flip the switch from fan to enemy. Someone you dreamed of working with maybe even building a true bond with becomes one of your main sources of frustration and now it either he destroy you or you destroy him.

  There’s a famous excerpt on legendary rapper Blade Icewood album “Blood Sweat & Tears” that has his uncle speaking in which his uncle says “Don’t Look Up to None of The N*****, Look Eye To Eye or Don’t Look at All”. That quote may be the proper way to go about handling interaction with heroes. If the pedestal is removed than maybe the disappointments can be less and the interaction can be more genuine.

Here’s the photo , I’m referring to. Burberry checked bag alongside a flower , not a lot going on but it looks perfect. 

I was looking at a photo today on Instagram and I was really intrigued by the simplicity of it.

The simplistic nature of the photo made me wanna make a purchase and it just made think about the strength of composition.

Not good compositions either the trunk or painting needs to move. 

To me composition is just the ability to put things exactly where they need to go. It’s like a producer placing a tag right before the beat the drop, an interior decorator placing the right center piece, or even a seamstress sewing the logo at just the right spot.

Perfect composition the Balance of colors and the demand of focus to the character’s face make this a fine example of composition.
