THE POWER OF STUPID

THE POWER OF STUPID

IMG_1769.JPG

Being in law school has been one of the most fun and challenging experiences of my life. All my life I’ve been deemed as a smart and intelligent person by myself and others. However as of late, I’ve never realized how refreshing it is to feel stupid.

Being surrounded by people much smarter than me made me realize how little I know. So many different backgrounds equipped with different experiences, these people have become possessed with knowledge I wouldn’t have attained on my own path.

Stupidity and ignorance are usually associated with negative connotations because these words make you think of fools set in their ways; unwilling to change and these words are said as if they’re the permanent state of the person that is being described with such words.

IMG_1770.JPG

Being ignorant and willing to learn is probably the best position to be in, in order to ensue growth. Admittedly knowing nothing and actively seeking to acquire knowledge shows you’re more than ready to contribute to and absorb the world around you.

IMG_1771.JPG

Ironically stupidity can only serve as a driving force for smart people. In accordance with the words of the Lovely Ms. Erykah Badu: “The man that knows something knows that he knows nothing at all”

WHAT IS KNOWN IS WHAT IS SHOWN

WHAT IS KNOWN IS WHAT IS SHOWN

Today was one of the first days I decided to "dress up" for class and the reactions were quite surprising. Everyone inquired on which occasion I was dressed for in which I promptly responded "life".

Then again I had to remember everyone don't know about my days of high school/undergrad in which, I dressed to the tee almost everyday. And today's situation made me realize people only know what you show.

For example, Kanye West may have the most misunderstood personality in existence. In the eyes of the public most people see arrogance, anger, unfiltered passion...qualities which may make someone very not personable.

But those who are closest to Ye always speak of his joking nature and often try to reassure the public , Ye is not as exaggerated as he seems.

Taken from Big Sean's verse on Kanye West's "See Me Now" 👉🏾 https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/my-beautiful-dark-twisted-fantasy/id403822142

However until a person see those said qualities for their self the only logical action that can follow is assumption.

So if you are seeking to be known/perceived as something else, then that something else is what you must make an effort to show. If you never show we'll never know!

SHORTCUTS ARE EARNED

SHORTCUTS ARE EARNED

My mantra of #ANTISHORTCUT, still stands, in terms of there is no easy way in achieving what you want. But as you move closer to your achievements, you'll find they'll be things you could do to make the process much easier.

Allow me to explain.

When I first started briefing cases for law school , I used to spend hours briefing one case! This is because I didn't know what I looking for in the material and I haven't spent enough time with.

Think of a first time driver. Their always extra cautious and tend to stick to preferred routes. But when there's someone experienced behind the wheel, they know places like the back of their hand and they can conduct an entire orchestra at the same time while driving.

Inexperience can't lead a person to taking alternatives (shortcuts). It's particularly the reason why taking shortcuts lead to failure because you haven't even put in the work to take one!

Recently KAWS(one of the most successful visual artists in the world) was posting old graffiti pics from the archives of his sketchbooks. It made me think of how those pictures are of much more valued now after seeing the level of success KAWS had reached.

Those postings started a shift in my mind and made me sure that I should keep my creations from earlier periods as they are sure to have more value over time.

Hearing a JAY Z record in 91 definitely fails in comparison to a JAY Z record of today. But think about hearing an unreleased JAY Z record from 91' in 2017? It's much more intriguing to engulf yourself in the growth and differences between The Old HOV and the new HOV.

People will always appreciate the journey, even if they don't appreciate it in the beginning. This is why they say the destination is the journey because when people finally learn of your journey they will be left in awe in how you evolved, grew, and achieved!

WHY WE LOVE HOODIE MELO

When one thinks of the name Carmelo Anthony what comes to mind? Nuggets, Knicks, Champion (nope not yet) but a recent change of attitude may be enough to make that word more synonymous with the veteran hooper.

When Melo was drafted in 03' we saw a young superstar who we knew was destined for a ring. He won the FINAL FOUR tournament in college and we just knew that competitiveness would transfer to the elite level. Yet it's hard to recall if Carmelo ever made it past the first round.

Even with promising rosters with the Nuggets and more recently the Knicks, Melo gave off a "I don't care I'm just here" attitude that wasn't taking him far, alongside off the court relationship drama, it wasn't looking too good. Then a change started to occur, people started to notice a different animal was released when a certain article of clothing was donned.

What we saw was the birth of Hoodie Melo. That's the nickname given to Melo after seeing him dominate and return to his competitive edge during off season runs of pickup basketball and training regimes.

IMG_4278.GIF

Hoodie Melo transcends the literal fact of Melo wearing a hoodie, its about the attitude , the promising look of a winner, the hunger, that is what makes the Hoodie Melo persona so compelling.

FullSizeRender.jpg

Of course Melo will not be allowed to wear a hoodie while on the court so as silly it seems we are poised to ask ourselves "will Melo be the same without the hoodie"? Time will be our only determining factor but once the hunger for success sets in the only thing that can settle that appetite is more success!

NO REST FOR CHAMPIONS

NO REST FOR CHAMPIONS

FullSizeRender.jpg

So you achieved an incredibly difficult accomplishment in your life? Congrats, now the whole world is waiting to take you down, you should feel proud. Society tends to focus plenty of energy on winning "the big score" but hardly ever prepare for what come afterwards. Once you've surpassed everyone in your competitive sphere you immediately paint a target on your back.

When Drake started to receive unprecedented praise as the biggest artist in the world people instantly went to "dethrone" him, sort of speak. The Patriots entered their season opener as winners on the biggest stage in football and went home with an L on the first night.

There's a quote from Dr.Dre that goes " You said you wanted a spot like mine But remember, anybody can get it The hard part is keeping it, motherfucker."

the quote above is taken from Kendrick Lamar's "Wesley's Theory" from his 2015 LP, TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY

The challenge isn't in winning it's the consistency of winning. Once you win you proved yourself to be the best but you give ammo into making others better. Take for example, the Golden State Warriors. After their acquisition of Kevin Durant, this past off-season left teams scrambling to compete with the juggernaut in Oakland, making trade deals left and right. But remember the KD trade happened as a result of Lebron being too good.

The best always make people readjust but the greatest always continue to readjust their game as well.

TIMES OF WORK: TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE DAY & NIGHT

TIMES OF WORK: TAKING ADVANTAGE OF DAY & NIGHT

IMG_3529.JPEG

IMG_3531.PNG

I'm one week before law school "officially" starts but it's been feeling like two weeks already. Everyday I've been studying and briefing cases all of which have led me to allocate my time correctly.

MORNING

Probably the most effective way to take advantage of any day is getting your day started earlier than the average population. There's too many working advantages in this equation: the roads are clear, the lines are short, and the noise is non-existent. In my case my early rise has allowed me to get high demanded books checked out in the library before anyone could think of using them.

IMG_3532.JPEG

EVENING

Much like doing things very early, accomplishing tasks late at night also have unparalleled advantages. Usually everyone is sleep or locked away which can give you time to exercise without any interruptions, go for an unbothered swim or simply catch up on some much delayed reading. In my case I use the late night as a precursor for the next day of work so I won't have to get up as early all the time. Using the late night hours effectively allows for extra sleep in the morning.

IMG_3533.JPEG

As you move in your adult years you'll find the best time for getting things is done is either really early in the morning or really late at night. If you choose any time in between you can't complain about the horrors that comes with it , be prepared to deal with it and carry on!

PLAYER OR PROPERTY

PLAYER OR PROPERTY

In most recent news NBA fans have been turned on their heads after learning of the trade that landed Kyrie Irving in Boston and Isaiah Thomas & Company in Cleveland. Upon this news fans in Boston began to burn Isaiah Thomas' jersey. The disrespect sent the King himself, Lebron James on a rant about the disheartening act.

This in turn led me to think how do people actually view these players? This isn't the first time a jersey is burnt and it won't be the last. Also, whenever players choose to speak their raw consciousness an uproar always seems to be caused. Naturally it's hard to show empathy for people who makes millions of dollars and live a life the average American could even dream about. However is that all people see in athletes , money makers that are sworn to undying loyalty or else ?

“You doing it for me, It’s all good,” Green said. “You doing it against me … you speaking out against my organization, it’s not good anymore? That’s a slave mentality. A slave master mentality. That’s ridiculous. It was all fine and dandy when he was laying people out, taking fines and all this stuff for your organization. But now all of a sudden when he says something that he feels, it’s a problem.”......excerpt from The Mercury News, article by Marcus Thompson II

Those statements were regarding the incident between Knicks owner James Dolan and NBALegend Charles Oakley.

So what's the call of action here? Boycott the NBA? Call everyone racist? No none of that will be necessary. Fans and Owners need to simply adopt a 7 letter word emphasized by Aretha Franklin.RESPECT.

IMG_3332.JPEG

Respect the fact Isaiah Thomas led your favorite team to a NBA eastern conference finals. Respect the fact that Lebron led those 2007 Cavaliers to a finals and decided to come back to led them to more finals despite being disrespected by the owner.

Appreciation for the services of your favorite athletes is all it takes to keep basketball the competitive fun spirited sport it is. Most fans are emotionally invested but our emotions shouldn't be what makes us emotionless towards our favorite athletes, don't let that go over you head.

WHAT TURNS A HOBBY INTO A PROFESSION

WHAT TURNS A HOBBY INTO A PROFESSION

IMG_3276.JPEG

During yesterday's adventure on the internet, I was going back and forth between Reddit and YouTube watching comedy videos, reading series theories etc. I noticed that some of the reddit users comments were so well thought out and analytical , I thought to myself they could really capitalize off their way of thinking if they put it into some form of brand.

Then as I watched certain YouTube videos I noticed how clean-cut and professional they were and the videos weren't even serious topics just people having fun. It made me think what separates hobbies and professions, what allow people to have a well funded career for something they would do for free?

IMG_3277.JPEG

MONETIZATION

For the most part when you seek to make money off of something it's just isn't fun and games anymore. For example, a graphic designer may just be a person who's good with photoshop and make flyers for people on occasion free of charge. However once that person decided to put a price on their services it's almost an instantaneous mind shift of "yeah,no problem" to "imma need a deposit".

monetized my hobby of drawing by creating clothes/accessories featuring my artwork, head to merchandise tab to purchase

COMMITMENT

This factor is the most crucial , just because someone makes a step towards monetization doesn't mean they're on the level of professionalism. A large group of people do things for money grab or as we like to call it "quick flips". When a person is operating from a mind state of the "quick flip" , the person is only attached to a thing as long as it brings them money. When the money stops so do they. It's the people who keep making videos when no one is watching , makes music when no one is listening, keeps auditioning when no one gives them a call back, those are the ones who gets to fulfill their dreams.

you need to have LEBRON JAMES level of commitment  !

you need to have LEBRON JAMES level of commitment  !

Overall, it's the commitment to your hobby that allows monetization to manifest. Quick grabs and easy hustles are all fool's gold. If you're not going to be serious with what you do , don't waste anyone's time, more importantly , don't waste your own!
