THIS SONG TAUGHT US ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS EVER

Already an underrated producer/lyricist, west coast legend, DJ Quik provided us with one of the most important life lessons presented through hip hop. The classic “Jus Lyke Compton” from the 1992 release, “Way 2 Fonky”.

The opening verse, as Quik get ready to tell his foray w/ the city of Oakland.

The song goes on a three verse journey about how Compton isn’t the only place with gangstas. Quik describe his ventures into various cities, such as, “St. Louis”, “San Antonio”, and “Oakland.” With as fearsome and dangerous Compton was, Quik soon realized that these other places had a level of griminess to them that was as bad or even worse as his native city.

Quik learned a lesson everyone has to eventually learn that comes from rough backgrounds, its gangstas in every city and they will shake your world if you’re not moving correctly. That’s right, just because you have little knowledge of a place or you come from a place with a volatile reputation does not mean the next city is for play play. Majority of my readers should know I’m from Detroit, e.7 mile specifically, a place that is literally engulfed with street culture. It almost makes you think how could someone like me come from a place like that.

Anyways just because I come from a rough neighborhood, I did not go down to Pine Bluff(where I went to undergrad) thinking people was any softer. When we visited Houston often it didn’t make me want to underestimate the locals. Heck even in Lansing, for as much joking I probably did about Lansing, I still know thorough people are living in the capital and they’re about whatever.

Now in the conclusion of the song, Quik threw shots about “Denver” saying how “they wanna be like Compton” but that still doesn’t take away from the message. Like I said earlier about Lansing, you can talk crap about the next city till your lips turn blue but always keep in mind someone is ready to match your level of toughness every time. Its up to you to decide whether you want that smoke or not.
